Richmond, the Confederate capital for most of the war, offers a wealth of Civil War sites. The circular battlefield driving tour takes visitors to 1862 and 1864 battlefields, including the major sites of Gaines's Mill, Cold Harbor, and Malvern Hill. You won't find row after row of cannon or monuments like at Gettysburg or Antietam, but you will find oases of calm away from the Richmond-Petersburg sprawl. The sparse crowds allow you to reflect in private on the great events that occured on these grounds.
