In rural Johnston County, North Carolina, surrounded by large, flat farms, sits the Harper House, which served as a Union hospital during the March 1865 battle of Bentonville. It is the focal point of a modern battlefield park, which also includes a few monuments and graves. In the surrounding countryside, Joe Johnston led a rag-tag army of about 20,000, pulled together from across the South, in a desperate attempt to hinder Sherman's march through the state toward Virginia.  It was the largest battle fought in North Carolina and the last major engagement between these two generals. The following battle photos are from the first of two fights reenacted in March 2005 - "The Last Charge of The Army of  Tennessee."
