In rural Johnston County, North Carolina, surrounded by large, flat farms, sits the Harper House, which served as a Union hospital during the March 1865 battle of Bentonville. It is the focal point of a modern battlefield park, which also includes a few monuments and graves. In the surrounding countryside, Joe Johnston led a rag-tag army of about 20,000, pulled together from across the South, in a desperate attempt to hinder Sherman's march through the state toward Virginia. It was the largest battle fought in North Carolina and the last major engagement between these two generals.
