Appomattox is sort of a small-scale colonial Williamsburg. Part of it is authentic, and much of the rest is reconstructed. Visitors tour a number of buildings, including a jail, courthouse, store, and the McClean house, the site of Lee's famous surrender to Grant. Reenactors take on the garb and mannerisms of period characters for group talks, and the visitor center houses a small but highly interesting collection relating to the battle and Lee's retreat from Petersburg to Appomattox.
